What We Mean

Kwik allowed a complete novice like myself to create an application that has been recognized by The Guardian, Corona SDK, and a host of online blogs. I couldn't be more grateful to Kwik for the world it opened to me.

THE STORY BEHIND

What We Mean
What We Mean is a poetry chapbook and creative application. Composed using love letters written between his grandmother and grandfather during World War II, J. A. Fisher presents 20 blackout poems.

In an effort to simulate a poetic War Department Censurer, Mr. Fisher redacted sections of his grandfather’s letters into poetry. Using the versatility of the digital medium, he weaves a poetic narrative between the original content of the letters and the poems. Readers can swipe between both copies at will; choosing to either read the intact letters, poems, or the narrative that takes place between the two.

Enjoy this final unspoken conversation between grandson and grandfather and then create your own masterpiece. Compose works of art, jokes, and meaning using your device’s camera in concert with the instruments of What We Mean.

How did Kwik help?

If it weren’t for Kwik I would never have gotten into programming. Having never written a line of code or worked with object-oriented programming, Kwik allowed me to learn about a new field without being overwhelmed. Now, in under a year, I am using Kwik for three projects at once: laying the groundwork and composing screens before experimenting and expanding with Corona SDK and Lua. Kwik allowed a complete novice like myself to create an application that has been recognized by The Guardian, Corona SDK, and a host of online blogs. I couldn’t be more grateful to Kwik for the world it opened to me.

What are your favorite features?

I used Kwik 1 and was a happy tester for Kwik 2 when it came out. I’ve watched Kwik evolve into the powerful plugin that it is today. I don’t mean to sound as if i am glossing over anything, but Kwik, as a whole, is full of my favorite features. I can’t pick out one out of the many that I’ve used as a personal favorite. I can tell you that the navigation bar, once it was implemented, allowed me to finish What We Mean. So I have a special place in my heart for that feature.

Any tips or tricks?

Always make diagrams and plan your application before your start. Sketch it on paper, exactly what each button is supposed to do, where it will go, and how it will function before you start working with Kwik. You’ll save a lot of time in the long run by not having to go back and change things.
