New iPad projects or not?

The new iPad is here and it’s Retina screen is really great (I have mine in hands at this moment). The big question now is: should you build your projects or not for the new device? Wait before simply answer “Of course!”. You will see the answer is not that simple. Let’s start with some facts first: – due the size and resolution of the screen, your projects will grow (average) 3x in size; – only 6% of the iPad market is running the new device at this moment; – projects made for the old iPads will automatically be re-scaled by iOS 5.1, with no need of rewriting code (you…

Interview with Miss Pivot

Today I like to share my chat with the Miss Pivot team, creators of Fire Cupid, an amazing app made partially with Kwik. Enjoy! How did Kwik help you to build it? Any favorite features? We needed a way to build animations / interactions in to our infographics. Since we design everything in Photoshop, it was really nice to animate everything from there. Our favorite feature ending up being the built in animation effects. We found the animations and interactions to work the same on both iPad and Android devices. Any trick/tip you would like to share? I found that sometimes things don’t work they way you think they will….

Interview with Ed Dalbello

This week my chat is with Ed, from JuluMedia, designer of “The Bunny with a crooked ear” and “The Star that felt from heaven”. I believe Ed is also the first Kwik user to use the multi-language feature! Congratulations Ed for making two apps almost simultaneously! Tell a little bit about you and your company? JuluMedia.com is actually a merge of two passions. The first is a passion for my two daughters, Julie and Louise (JuLu), for which I made several stories for them when they were little. The second is a desire to help children and work with compassion ministry. I work as volunteer for a great US Christian…

Interview with Benjamin Chong

The Dream, World Explorer Edition, by Swipea, is, in my opinion, one of the best storybooks made with Kwik till now. What the team did (besides the great story and beautiful illustrations) for activities in the Happy Bazaar, was simply amazing (honestly, I have no idea how they make some of the activities without coding )! Ben was kind enough to share some of his experiences building the app with us. Enjoy! Tell a little bit about you and your company? Gamebit Labs is a new startup developing mobile apps, specifically children apps and ‘games’. We’re a small team of two but with earth size ambitions. There’s me, Ben the…

Interview with Alan Chait

This week I talked to Alan, from Bassettapps, creator of Fun with Flags, another app made with Kwik. Tell a little bit about you and your company? Bassettapps.com is a one person company – just me. I wanted to learn how to write apps for mobile devices after my son paid over $7,000 to have a simple app made (and it didn’t work very well). I’m in the printing business and not a programmer but I have limited experience in database programming and HTML/CSS which I enjoy very much. To learn how to develop apps, in my limited spare time I started to read books and watch videos about creating…

K2 progresses

It is really soon to show things coming up with K2 (it is in an early stage of development) but I would like to share some news, especially on the development process and the workflow I use. Maybe it will provide some insights for you as well. The Goals For version 1, the main goal was to provide an easy tool for designers and illustrators to create storybooks. With dozens of applications made, and some even winning some awards, I am really happy to say the aim was achieved. For K2, the main goals are: Enable designers and illustrators to create amazing stories with activities that may include physic and…

Interview with Marmelada

To end this week interviews, I would like to share my conversation with Fotis, from Marmelada, the authors of The King with Dirty Feet, another storybook made with Kwik, available at http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/king-with-dirty-feet/id501754179?ls=1&mt=8 Tell a little bit about you and your company? We are a small group of individual artists (Author/narrator: Sally Pomme Clayton, illustrator: Martha Tsiara, music: Panos Ghikas, Interactive designer: Fotis Begklis ) that decided to work together under the name of “marmelada” (my old interactive design company) in the production of interactive storybooks for children and adults. What is the app about? ‘The King with Dirty Feet’ – the picture-book and the storyteller meet inside an app! The…
