Interview with Nick Nebelsky

This week we chat with Nick, from Intense Media, the second published author using Kwik. Nick is behind the Opening Rome app, available at AppStore: http://itunes.apple.com/app/opening-rome/id450064939?mt=8

Tell a little bit about you and your company:
nick3I created Intense Media as a way of incorporating all of my talents under one roof, if you will. It’s a place where I can use my design skills, love for photography, cartooning, animation, and publishing to create products that are useful, entertaining, and engaging.

Since childhood, I knew that I would own a company where I could create. And I have owned other creative and successful publishing companies in the past. In 2009, I started learning about Apple’s app store and it intrigued me so I became an Apple developer in late 2009. It took me a whole year to do it, but I put together my first iPhone app, My Basketball Stats. The app filled a need that my wife and I had while watching our son’s basketball games. And that’s when we decided to make Intense Media legal and create products that were useful, and entertaining. With two products under our belt, we plan to roll out books, more apps and hopefully an animation or two. It’s very exciting.

What is Opening Rome about?
page1I combined three loves into one app. I love to travel, love architecture, and love helping people. Rome is such a beautiful city; wherever you go it feels like a museum. It’s my feeling that everyone should visit Rome once in their lives. Even if you’re not Catholic, Rome offers you so much. We wanted to “Open the Door to Rome” so that everyone could have access to it. With Opening Rome, we show you all the popular sites, some hidden treasures and how to save you money! And because these pictures represent photos that I took on my honeymoon, couples who are PLANNING a honeymoon should read this book, they will save so much money!
The book is about architecture and so much more, we also found that we wanted to tell our readers about the food, the art, the people, and how to save money! We wanted to create a book that showed travelers that they could visit Rome for less than they thought possible. For two people, the hotel and airfare are the most expensive, but with our little shortcuts, we’ll show you how to cut your budget in half. Opening Rome encourages our readers to open Rome as if it were a door and see what’s inside. Beautiful art, architecture, food, and fun await the curious traveler. It’s not a book about shoestring budgets, but it does show you how to stretch your dollar. This first version is only 10% what we plan on showing to you in future versions! With over 1,300 pictures and movies to choose from, there will be no shortage of topics to discuss. We even have exclusive photos of Pope Benedict and the pope mobile.

How Kwik helped you to build it?
When I read what KWIK could do, my jaw dropped! As a non-programmer, I constantly struggle on the programming end of creating apps. It’s what stops my creativity. Objective-C is no walk in the park. But when I found out about Corona SDK and then KWIK, I found Nirvana! Kwik is amazing in that all you need is a copy of Photoshop and your ingenuity. I work in Photoshop all the time. To think that I can create an app without writing a line of code sold me on the spot. Kwik helped us build a foundation for many new projects that were never on our radar. Without Kwik, I wouldn’t have taken this project on. Kwik made it easy to create buttons, put in audio, and helped make it easier to create such an attractive and entertaining book. It also saved me thousands of dollars in programming fees if I contracted this out. It also cut production down from six months to one to two.

What is your overall experience with us (product and services)?
I found out about Kwik when it was only three weeks old. So I learned Kwik while
the software was maturing. There were some hiccups along the way but the technical support was outstanding. That’s one of the perks of working with a smaller company. They work hard to help you become successful because if you are, they will be too! Alex was extremely patient with my learning curve and after you follow the video’s instructions, you’ll be able to create something very quickly.

What is next for you and your company?
We will creating a children’s book and trying out some of the new animation buttons that we didn’t try in our first book. I have a whole bunch of cartoon characters to draw from. Prior to using Kwik, my plan was to produce two apps a year. With Kwik and Corona, we plan to do one every two months. There are at least four new travel books planned in the next six to nine months and some more apps that help our clients do some amazing things. I love waking up each day! Thanks Kwik!

Thanks Nick for sharing your story! We are looking forward to share others here.
